Scottish Autism and Motherwell Football Club Help Young Fans Enjoy Their Day Out At The Football

Through recent partnership work with Motherwell Football Club, Scottish Autism had the opportunity to gift a family package for two adults and two children to attend the Motherwell vs Aberdeen SPFL Premiership match on Saturday 16th March.

The winner was Fiona Graham who attended the game with her daughter, Peyton, and their friends Catherine and Cammy. They were also able to make use of Motherwell’s sensory bags which are designed to improve the matchday experience for individuals who may find the experience overwhelming.

“Football is something as a family we all share a love for, albeit different teams which creates some fun on family derby days,” said Fiona. “Motherwell FC has always been a part of my life; I would go when I was younger with my parents to games home and away and I love that I am now able to create new memories with my club and my own children.”

When it comes to matchdays, Fiona must be mindful of many things to ensure Peyton has an enjoyable experience. “I always make sure I have snacks in case my daughter decides on the day they don’t want their usual from the kiosk.”

On the day itself Fiona said that Peyton and Cammy thoroughly enjoyed their experience. “The kids loved the whole day, from having their photo taken to grabbing snacks at the kiosk. While the score wasn’t the one we had hoped for and had slightly deflated them, the interaction from the players as they were leaving the pitch had them leaving the ground with smiles on their faces.”

When asked for her views on the sensory bags, Fiona remarked “the bags were great, the kids loved the fidget spinners, and this kept them amused ahead of the game starting and during half time.”

Fiona also has some ideas for how the club could further enhance the experience for fans with additional support needs and Scottish Autism will provide feedback to the club to assist them in exploring how they can continue to improve the experience for their supporters.

While Motherwell may not have won the game itself, it’s clear that a great day out was had by Fiona, Peyton, Catherine and Cammy.
