Celebrating 10 Years

On Saturday (31st October) we held a family fun day to celebrate New Struan School’s 10th anniversary since moving into our new purpose built building for children with autism in 2005.

It has been a great 10 years and in that time we have met and supported so many wonderful children and young people with autism who have benefitted from the autism-friendly design of our school.

To celebrate we invited families, friends and people from the local community to join us for a day of fun at New Struan School. We had a petting zoo, which included a snake, chicken and a rabbit. There was a face painting stall where the children could be painted as their favourite animal, as well as a raffle and plenty of cakes.

We also had a climbing wall that was a huge hit among the children! The local fire brigade and the Ochil Mountain Rescue teams brought along their vehicles for everyone to explore. Lots of the children had a great time learning how to use the fire hose and even having a go by themselves.

Another highlight of the day was the ‘throw the wet sponge’ stall.  Volunteers Lucy and Brian were the targets and were hit by many wet sponges throughout the day.

To commemorate the day, one of our pupils, Scot Gilchrist, created a piece of artwork that will be displayed at the school. This was made possible with support from the individuals who are supported at Scottish Autism’s Art Opportunities service in Alloa, a vocational day service that allows adults with autism to express themselves through art and creativity.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along and joined us for this celebration. Thank you to our Parent Ambassador, Janice Davidson, for organising the event and to everyone who helped on the day! It was wonderful to see all the children really enjoying themselves and parents and staff having the opportunity to meet each other and get to know one another a bit better.
